Sizing vintage denim when the tag lies
Waistband math, shrink history, and the three measurements you actually need.

Vintage denim sizing is, charitably, a polite fiction. A pair of 501s tagged W30 from 1994 might measure anywhere from 28 to 31 inches across the waistband, depending on whether they were sanforized, how many times they've been washed, and whether the previous owner ever ran them through a hot dryer.
Forget the tag. The three measurements that actually predict fit are: waistband flat (doubled for total), front rise, and inseam. With those three numbers and a tape measure on a pair of jeans you already love, you can buy vintage with surprising accuracy.
Pre-1980s denim almost always shrinks an additional 3 to 6 percent if it hasn't been washed yet. Look for the words 'shrink-to-fit' or 'STF' — these need a hot soak before you'll know the real size. Anything labelled sanforized has already done its shrinking and will measure true.
When the listing photos don't show a flat measurement, ask. Most experienced sellers will measure on request within a day. If they refuse or stall, that's the answer.
